My Healthy Hair Journey

Taking care of my hair

Washing

Any time I wash my hair I always deep condition. Every once in a while, I’ll do a hot oil treatment over the conditioner. This helps to maximize moisture retention as well as reducing breakage and shedding. You want to retain any new growth you get!

I also section my hair when applying the conditioner or any kind of hair mask or treatment. Sectioning allows you to completely saturate your hair with the product your using.

When I shampoo my hair I focus on the roots, which are the dirtiest part of your hair. Scratch your scalp you make sure you are removing any build up. Scratching also stimulates the scalp and it feels good 😊

Protective Styles

My go-to protective styles are braids, Marley twists, crochets and faux locs.

A protective style is any style that doesn’t require too much maintenance of your real hair.

Styles that are tight or pull and tug on your hair are not considered protective styles. This will damage the hair and cause thin and balding spots through out your hair.

Anytime you get a style you like or try something new, always ask yourself “Is this going to take my hair out??”. Even if you think it might, go with another hairstyle.

Moisturizing

I use the LOC Method when moisturizing my hair. This method provides MAXIMUM moisture retention! If you tend to have dry hair, this method is for you!

L - Liquid - Wet/saturate the hair. I use the Hair Juice

O - Oil - Seals in moisture. I use my Hair Growth Oil

C - Cream - Helps to retain moisture - I use the Shea Honey Hair Moisturizer or the Whipped Hair Butter

I noticed that using this method when trying to moisturize my hair, it’s been more manageable and my hair stays moisturized for longer periods of time. If I don’t have a protective style like braids or twists, I use this method 3-5 times a week depending on how dry it feels.

Silk & Satin

Scarfs, hair bonnets, headbands, scrunchies, hair ties and pillow cases need to be satin or silk.

Both silk and satin are great for your hair! The slip of the material allows the hair to glide against the material without causing breakage or damage to the hair.

Scarfs and bonnets help to keep a style nice and neat while sleeping. Scarfs are also great for laying your edges or laying down a ponytail/high puff style.

They help with the amount of tension when wearing your hair in a ponytail, high puff or bun. They also reduce the amount of breakage you experience when you take a hair tie or scrunchie out of your hair.

Detangling

I never strangle my hair dry. I always spray my hair with a leave in or water before combing or styling.

I section my hair into 4 parts. I focus on one section at a time. I use the LOC Method for detangling as well. Combing from the ends to the roots helps reduce the amount of shedding and breakage you may experience.

Be gentle when combing and brushing your hair. Being too rough can cause excess breakage and shedding. Also being too rough can weaken the hair overtime and cause damage to the hair follicle and scalp.
